Sister Week

Last Saturday afternoon, my sister Sheila and Brother-in-Law Vern joined us in Rockport. They are here until Friday and we are trying to cram as much into these few days as possible :)

We just sat around Saturday evening, visiting and catching up with each others lives.

On Sunday, we headed to the beach! It was a cool and cloudy day but that didn’t stop us from doing one of my favorite past times…driving the beach. We started at one end and didn’t stop till we reached the other.

After leaving the beach, we stopped at the Port Aransas Marina and park. There were several people fishing, including this guy who was being stalked by 4 pelicans. They were just waiting for him to pull in his line so they could try to swipe his catch! It was pretty funny and I must say, he had more patience with those birds than I would have had!

There were a few guys paddling around the harbor on sailboards. At first we couldn’t figure out what they were doing. They all had large net bags of something. Once they came ashore, we found out that it was trash they were collecting from one of the jetties. It washes in with the tide and they clean it up. Great idea and great job guys! Also great balance!

We walked around the marina looking at all the boats and picking out the ones we’d like to have :)

Nice sailboat.

How about this one? It’s a beaut!

More gorgeous boats

I decided that this one was probably the only one that would fit in my budget! The owner of “Sir Leksalot” definitely has a sense of humor too :)

From the marina, we drove over to Goose Island State Park to see the BIG tree. In 1966, the tree measured  44’ high, 89’ spread and 42.75’ in circumference. The age of the tree is estimated to be in excess of 1000 years.

“Record or Champion Trees are determined by their girth, their spread and their height. There are many Live Oaks that surpass this tree's height, however when the tree's girth is factored in, it makes this one the Champion Live Oak in Texas.”

Metal stakes and guy wires help support the heavy branches.

It was quite impressive!

We finished off the day with a dinner at The Boiling Pot. This is a boiled seafood feast consisting of shrimp, crawfish, blue crap, 3 different types of crab legs, sausage, corn on the cob and red potatoes. They cook it all in a big pot and then dump it in the middle of your table. It’s a little messy to eat :)  Mix it up with a couple beers and great company and the day was complete.

A Trip to the Aquarium and Bill Mills for Sheriff???

The other day, we stopped by the Rockport Aquarium. This a small town aquarium with limited exhibits. Because it was a small town aquarium with limited exhibits, it was also free :) The building sits right on the harbor.

A Moray Eel

A representation of sea life in the Gulf

And in Aransas Bay

Although small, it was mainly set up as a resource for children. There was several “hands on” activity tables and a staff to help and instruct.

It was a short excursion :)

After a quick stop at the store, we headed home. On our way, we saw a couple new signs…Bill Mills for Sheriff!

Our good friends, Bill and Nancy Mills, are joining the ranks of full time RVers. They left their home in SC a couple weeks ago for a Florida vacation. Since they’ve been gone, their house sold, their sale closed and they ordered their new motorhome! And, they’re still on vacation! Their house was on the market for 19 months. I’ll bet if they had known all it took was a trip to Florida, they would have done it sooner :)

So, Bill, if you’re going to win this election, you better high-tail it from Florida to Texas NOW!

Well, guess that’s it for today. Thanks for stopping by. Turtle

Our New Yard Sign

As we’ve traveled this past year, I’ve had my eye out for a place I could have a sign made to display outside Lucy when we’re parked for awhile. I’ve never had any luck. I just couldn’t find what I was looking for. When we arrived in Rockport, I made it my mission to find something. Still no luck.

Then I turned to my old friend, Ebay. I found a seller who would make you anything you wanted, custom carved and hand painted  with unlimited personalization. He had excellent feedback and he would make it and ship it for under $40! (8”x16”) I thought that was an incredible deal so I ordered our sign. We communicated back and forth several times so he could be sure he made us exactly what we wanted.  He used redwood, exterior paint and then sealed it. I love it! What do you think?

Now, we just have to get it hung :)

Our Time As Winter Texans...So Far

Today marks one month we have been at Estes RV Resort in Rockport, Texas. We have adjusted to life as Winter Texans quite well :) Most notably, my lack of blogging :) We are just laid-back retirees here. Our days are spent just doing everyday things.

Like walking on the beach.

And sitting on the beach.

Even walking off the beach. This is across the road from us. It’s on the water but is not a beach. Not too shabby though, huh?

For a small park, there is something going on frequently. We have potlucks often. There's another one tonight and then a movie following it.

Saturday morning is a pancake and sausage breakfast. It’s at 8:00. I signed Rick up to go. That’s way too early for me :) I told them if they wanted to do brunch…around 11ish, I’d come :)

2011-12-31 20.08.47

At least one day a week is game day where we play things like Hand and Foot, Farkle or Mexican Train. So far we've learned Farkle, a fast paced dice game. Hand and Foot instructions are coming tomorrow. Mexican Train is a dominoes game and the only dominoes either of us have ever played was standing them all up to see them all fall down :) Guess we'll need instructions on Mexican Train also :)

We now know almost everyone in the park by name. It's a big family and as big families go, some of us get together and go out to eat also. As Rick says, "It sure gets noisy when all the old people show up!"

Here is Tilly, our park mascot. She showed up one day last year and stayed. They had animal control relocate her, but she found her way back this year :) Last week, they again relocated her. It seems empty without her here. She let us pet her and she’d follow us around like a puppy. We all wonder if she’ll find her way home again :)

2011-12-26 17.03.00

We thought Tilly was a goat, but apparently she is some sort of sheep. If you look at her from the rear, she looks like a deer.

Well, it’s time for me to get my food together for tonight's potluck.

Wishing You a Happy, Healthy 2012

It's hard to believe that both Christmas and the New Year are gone and we are into 2012.

Although we moved into Lucy in Oct. 2010, we didn't start traveling in her until early January 2011. We have completed our first full year. It was a very good year :)

Things have been quiet here at Estes RV Resort in Rockport. We've been staying close to home over the holidays. As this is a very small park, it's easy to become familiar with everyone here. We had a Christmas Eve gathering, a Christmas Day gathering, a New Years Eve gathering and a New Years Day gathering. In between, we had Wednesday Movie Night :) We saw "The Help". Excellent movie, highly recommended.

Other than that, we've taken walks on the beach, walks off the beach and spent a good amount of time just visiting with neighbors.

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and that 2012 brings you everything you need and many things you want :)
