Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve was spent at Nic's house this year. We were joined by her friends Geraud, Laine and Gregor. Dinner was awesome pork tenderloin with asparagus, carrots and potatoes au gratin. Dessert was a perfect lemon tart and Gregor's dessert wine as an accompaniment. A very nice evening.

Nicole surprised us with the news she will be moving to Italy next September! More on that to come...

Home again, home again

We left for home this morning...only to be stopped in our tracks by a huge rock slide! The I-40 was closed at the TN/NC border and we had to detour north in TN and then come back south in NC. The leaves were at their peak this weekend and it was an absolutely gorgeous detour!
This is a bad photo. My only option was to shoot through the windshield....not the best solution. The colors were so much more brilliant than this shows.

A few cute grandkid pics while we're at it :)

I love these kids dearly and I love spending time with them. It sure is nice to sleep in my own bed again though! :)

A day at the Science Center

We took Pockey to the airport this morning and then headed for the Pizza Hut buffet and the Science Center. What fun! I'm sure all of us could have stayed until tomorrow!

Snow in October!

We left Wisconsin today to return to NC, do laundry, repack and head to Nashville to meet our new granddaughter. We got up in the morning and it was snowing! We headed for MSP and it snowed harder. By the time we reached MN, there was about 3-4" on the ground! That's way too early, even for the midwest!

Happy Birthday Grandma Joan!

Happy 80th Birthday Mom! Hope you have many more.

We all went out to dinner to celebrate and most had a very delicious prime rib. Attendees included Mom, Rick and I, Randy and Ree, Sheila and Vern, Randy and Kathy, Jen and Matt plus 4 :)

We also celebrated Mya's 4th birthday which was October 9th. This week in October is prolific with family birthdays now. Sabrina on the 8th, Mya on the 9th and Mom on the 10th.

Sabrina Rose

This morning at the ungodly hour of 4:00 AM, we left for the airport to fly to MSP. From there the plan was to rent a car and drive to my mom's house in Willard, Wi for a long weekend in celebration of her 80th birthday. We were up at 2:45 (couldn't sleep) and out of the house in plenty of time. The flight was uneventful. We landed a few minutes late and started the trek to the Alamo counter-the equivalent of 7.5 miles-or so it seemed :)

Just before reaching the rental car area, my cell phone rang. It was son-in-law Thomas informing us that, while we were boarding our flight, daughter Carrie delivered their baby in the front seat of their van while he raced to the hospital and the other 3 kids watched! Quite dramatic! Mom and baby are doing well and so are Dad and sibs. Sabrina Rose arrived at 5:11 AM central time weighing in at 7# 6.25 oz. and measuring 19" long. She has a full head of black hair and she's just beautiful. Labor lasted less than 1 hour. Many moms would be jealous of that!

Bye Bye Treadmill, Bye Bye Bow Flex

In our effort to downsize and get rid of "stuff", we've decided to use Craigslist. As a test, I listed 3 cases of shipping labels for free yesterday (Friday) morning...had 11 responses in an hour! They were picked up shortly thereafter. Once that was complete, I listed the Bow flex and the Nordic Track treadmill. The response was amazing. The Bow flex was gone last night and the treadmill today. Both were priced to sell but it was still surprising to get that kind of response. Lesson learned: It's almost a full time job to list and respond and make appointments and show etc. Guess I'll stay busy :)
We leave Thursday early morning for Wisconsin to wish Mom a happy 80th. From there we go to Nashville to meet our new grandchild (who is scheduled to arrive on Friday by induction). I'll stay for a couple weeks and Rick will return home alone. No more sales until later in October once we're both back home.
They say ridding yourself of "stuff" is liberating and I totally get it. Just getting rid of the first 2 things is exciting. It makes me want to continue! That will just have to wait for short time :)

Another Mark Twain quote that just says it all...

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. Broad, wholesome, charitable views cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth." - Mark Twain

White Oak Creek Greenway

We met up with Bev and Lindy/Mikke/Walter in Cary this morning to do the White Oak Creek Greenway Trail. It's a very nice trail and we had a great time. Along with a short run through an adjoining neighborhood, we did a total of 9 miles. That gives us 16 miles for the weekend. Not bad but we need to be doing more during the week. Missing most of August due to weather and travel really did a number on our stamina. We need to get back into the groove!

Sea Eagle Paddle Ski

After trikking 7 miles on the Ambacco Trail this morning, we took out our new Sea Eagle for it's maiden voyage. Rick loaded everything in the Jeep and we took off for the boat landing around the corner from the house. After unloading, he pumped it up and we carried it down the ramp and put it in the water.

After donning our life vests and taking up the paddles, we set out to conquer Falls Lake. We paddled for about an hour and improved as the time went on. It's going to take some practice to get proficient at this paddling thing...especially the tandem part :)

All in all, it appears that it's going to work for our purposes. We can add a motor at some point if we want.

Repainting the dining room

I starting working on the dining room almost 2 weeks ago. It's been a long tedious job but it's almost complete.
The task was to change the color from burgundy to beige. After 6 coats (4 primer and 2 paint) it's time to scrub the floor and move the furniture back in. Another room down, unfortunately, many more to go. Sure hope my body holds out :) I'm mighty sore right now :)

Here's the finished product :)

Labor Monday

Another 7 miles today for the trikking log. The plan was to trikke in the morning and take in the Durham Bulls game in the afternoon. We missed the game as Rick got a call (he was on-call this weekend) and had to go to work for a little while.
We ended the day with dinner at King Chinese Buffet. They just recently opened on Glenn School Rd in the new Super Walmart Center. The food is always hot and good and the price is right.
Tomorrow is back to the same old, same old. Maybe I'll finish painting the dining room :)

Labor Day Weekend Sunday

Trikked 7 miles on the American Tobacco Trail this morning-Crooked Creek to Riddle Rd and back. We used to do this run about 3x a week until it got HOT. This is the first time in over a month and boy, did we feel it! Took a nice long nap this afternoon.

Labor Day Weekend

We started the weekend doing yard work and pressure washing sidewalks etc. Sure looks good. It's amazing how much difference a major outdoor cleaning can make...almost like a major indoor cleaning :)

We hope to try out the new Sea Eagle some time this weekend.

Fulltime in 2010-still a possibility

The decision to push forward with our fulltiming plans is once again in motion. Being unemployed makes things a bit clearer. If we stay in the house, I'll have to get another job and we'll be tied here indefinitely. If I take my retirement next February and Rick takes his next October, we'll be fine living on the road. If we run short some months, we have a cushion and our investments to help. The investments are improving after the initial 40% plunge so we're very optimistic at this point. The housing market seems to have stabilized a bit also which is more good news. The current task is readying the house for market-cleaning, painting landscaping etc, etc. I have completed the laundry room and am currently working on the dining room. I've been sidelined for a few days with a cold/sinus thing that keeps me sneezing and blowing my nose all day. The goal is to have everything done and ready to put the house on the market in the spring (March/April). If it sells quickly, we'll move into an apartment for a short time while we shop for our motorhome. If it doesn't sell quickly, we'll wait it out here. Either way, it will happen eventually.

Officially Laid Off

Today was my last day working for the University of North Carolina. I became a victim of the state budget cuts. So, after 17 years of working at UNC and 6 months before I can apply for state retirement, I am unemployed. Monday I shall apply for unemployment benefits.

First Trikke Distance Ride

Woohoo! We did the American Tobacco Trail in Durham this afternoon…7.25 miles…plenty of hills, flats and challenges. It was exhausting and invigorating all at the same time :)
